UNESCO
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is a specialised agency which promotes world peace and security through education, the arts and science. Its headquarters are in Paris, France, and it has 53 regional field offices. It was formed in November of 1945. It has five major programme areas: education, natural sciences, social/human sciences, culture and communication/information. UNESCO supports projects that help to improve education around the world and that preserve our cultural heritage. World Heritage Sites of cultural and natural importance are part of this programme.
All UN member states are part of UNESCO, and it also has different partners made up of non-government organizations and private companies which support the work that it does. It also works to ensure the rights of journalists to report freely, and it gives prizes for various education initiatives which promote advances in its five programmes.
